1989 is the birth centenary year of Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, the founder of the biggest voluntary service organization of the time - Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Dr. Hedgewar founded RSS in Nagpur in 1925, based on the ideology of Hindu nationalism. It was firm belief of Doctorji that unless the natives of this land unite and feel proud of their cultural ancestry and start practicing the ‘Dharma’ and fight for this great land, there was no way in which our nation ‘Bharat’ could regain its old glory. December 19, 1961 marked the liberation of Goa from Portuguese rule and also the beginning of RSS work in the State. In 1989, during the birth centenary year of Dr. Hedgewar, RSS emerged in the form of many voluntary service organizations all over the country in the memory and respect of Doctorji. The RSS swayamsevaks (volunteers) from the State of Goa, under the leadership of Shri Laxman Vaman Behare, popularly known as ‘Nana’, formed a voluntary organization by name ‘Keshav Seva Sadhana (KSS)’

‘Keshav Seva Sadhana’ is a registered voluntary Organization, though formed in the year 1989, stands duly registered in the year 1992, under No.67/Goa/92, dated 16/04/1992, under the Societies Registration Act -21 of 1860. The voluntary work that started in moderate measure initially, soon expanded with active participation of the society in various fields like; (i) in the field of education of rural and poor children, by starting vidyarthi vasatigruha (hostels), (ii) in the field of health, by starting health care centers, consulting centers, physiotherapy center, nadi pariksha center, mobile clinics, by supply of medical equipment to the needy and poor people, by organizing health camps and blood donation camps etc.(iii) in the field of education and training of special children, by starting special schools, (iv) in the field of skill development for creating employment for the rural youth, by starting a vocational training institute and computer training center, (v) in the field of better employment, by preparing the Goan youth for various competitive examinations in the coaching center and also (vi) in the field of disaster management, by providing timely help at the spot of disaster/natural calamities like flood, earthquakes etc.

At present, all the diverse activities of service in various fields as above are well channelized through this organization, ‘Keshav Seva Sadhana’ in the State of Goa. KSS is most devotedly and silently working for the upliftment of the underprivileged section of society in the State. This Organization tries to address various social issues in the State of Goa, by offering services in different spheres of the society, more specifically in the field of health, education, skill development, employment and disaster management. The volunteers of KSS are persistently working in the remote villages of the State of Goa for the underprivileged people and more specifically for the economically backward students, unemployed youth and special children. The work of KSS is now deeply rooted and well spread in the field of education, health, skill development and other trainings/coaching provided for creating employment opportunities for the rural youth and in addressing other possible social issues of the lower economic stratum.

Every special child has some strengths. It is the trained teacher's acumen to identify them and make most of them so that the subject becomes more confident and is able to keep personal hygiene, do small chores, walk on the road safely, visit local shops, play simple games, make some articles and participate in social gatherings. Special children are taught games, physical exercises and yoga (pranayam) to improve physical and mental capacities. The parents' role in a special child's development is very critical. KSS Special School therefore conducts workshops for parents at the beginning of the academic year where they are fully oriented to the curriculum and methodology of the school. Regular workshops and training sessions are held between teachers and parents for more participation.

The KSS Special School has 162 students on roll for current academic year and is led by Principal Smt. Sanjana Prabhudesai with a dedicated team of 38 employees. The school is progressing well and has several achievements to its credit. In 2011, yet another special school was started at Valpoi. At the heart of our concept of a great nation lies the ability to perceive divinity in the common man. We are indeed inspired by this vision of seeking the divine in everyone around us as our mission.
